Exeter took a major step towards Aviva Premiership safety with a hard-fought 16-10 win at beleaguered Newcastle Falcons. The victory should be enough for the Chiefs to concentrate on pushing on for a top-six spot, but Newcastle probably should start planning for life in the Championship. They remain well adrift at the foot of the table but did squeeze a losing bonus point out of the game with Tim Swinson's converted try two minutes from time. The Chiefs led 10-0 at half-time after an opportunist try from scrum-half Haydn Thomas as Newcastle's habit of starting slowly and gifting tries struck again. Fly-half Ignacio Mieres kicked the conversion and added penalties either side of half-time plus a drop goal four minutes from the end to see the Chiefs cruising at 16-3 until Swinson's late strike raised a few doubts. Gopperth converted the close-range try to add to his second-half penalty to clinch a bonus point for the Falcons at 16-10, but it came too late. There was simply no-one at home when Thomas scampered through a yawning gap on the 22 and the scrum-half was never going to be caught, and Mieres' conversion made it 7-0 after ten minutes. The Falcons did have a couple of chances, the best midway through the half when Jeremy Manning just failed to get on the end of a Gopperth kick through, but they were on the back foot for the rest of the first half as their line-out misfired again and they failed to look after the ball when they had it. Saints rise to third with win over Falcons Northampton moved up to third place in the Aviva Premiership with a five-point 32-14 bonus win against beleaguered Newcastle Falcons. England full-back Ben Foden scored two cleverly worked tries at the start of each half to put the Saints in the driving seat. Giant prop Soane Tonga'uiha was driven over for the visitors' third while former Falcons man Tom May delivered the fourth try - and the bonus point - four minutes from time with his first touch after coming on as a late replacement. Victory sees Northampton leapfrog from sixth to third and leaves Newcastle firmly anchored at the foot of the table which makes next weekend's home game against Exeter a must-win for the Falcons. Ryan Lamb kicked two conversions and two penalties and substitute Stephen Myler also landed a conversion while Jimmy Gopperth kicked three penalties for Newcastle. Suka Hufanga scored a first half try Northampton were 10-0 up in as many minutes against a Newcastle side who are notoriously slow starters and the Saints scored their first try with embarrassing ease after Lamb's fourth-minute penalty. Macleod kicks Sharks up to third Nick Macleod won the kicking battle as Sale beat Newcastle to return to the Aviva Premiership Rugby play-off positions and leave their opponents at the foot of the table. Sale had taken a 16-0 lead after 24 minutes through three Macleod penalties and a converted Tom Brady try, but Newcastle mounted a comeback. After Macleod and Jimmy Gopperth had traded further three-pointers, substitute Jeremy Manning went over to reduce the gap to 19-10 at half-time. Vesty runs the show as Bath storm Kingston Park It was the Sam Vesty show at Kingston Park as the Bath fly-half rattled up 17 points from four penalties, a drop goal and a conversion and engineered the game's only try as his side rumbled to a comfortable 22-9 Aviva Premiership Rugby victory over Newcastle. Bath's pack dominated the game and Newcastle did themselves no favours by conceding lots of penalties, mainly at the breakdown, and an early try from Matt Carraro from which they never really recovered. The match did not start well for the Falcons - they made a mess of their first line-out to concede possession and were then penalised at the first scrum for taking it down. They also conceded the opening try after just eight minutes when Vesty sliced through the Falcons midfield and delivered a perfectly-timed pass for Carraro to score under the posts. Vesty made it 7-0 with the conversion. It took Newcastle a while to get going before a catch and drive and a crossfield kick from Jimmy Gopperth stretched Bath and a penalty resulted, which Gopperth landed in the 12th minute for 7-3. Ben Williams banged through on the crash ball enough to put Newcastle on the back foot and Vesty clipped over a 30-metre drop goal for 10-3 in the 15th minute.
